Aggressive Passivity

There comes a moment when everything becomes clear.

How many screws came loose in your head before that moment came for you? When I shook my head it sounded like a janitor falling down a staircase. "Crazy people don't know they are crazy," they said, and I agreed with them. After all they were right, I had no idea I was crazy or what I was capable of, and to a degree I still don't.

Right now there is something controlling you. It's holding you back. You are wrapped around its finger. An insignificant inhibition, to see across is easy, but to swim across a whole different story. It might be a person, it might be a belief, but its got you by the tail.

My friend Luke asked me the other day, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

It all became so clear. I practice aggressive passivity. I am my own roadblock.

"I want to write music," I said back to him.

Let me offer you some transparency. Do you know what I never do? Write music. When I was 19 I met a depressing drunk at a bar just outside of Grand Rapids. He told me he had tickets to see Styx in 1978, then something came up and he didn't go. I told myself, "I don't want to be this person." Three years later and I'm still that Styx guy. I'm not doing what I want to do. That's not entirely true, I did marry Rachel. I've made the necessary sacrifices to make our marriage a very happy one, but these sacrifices HAVE NOT gotten in the way of what I want to do. I have plenty of time to do what I want to do, I simply don't do what I want to do.

I'm just not meeting a goal. I live a great life day to day, but big picture I've made no progress on a singular goal. I've worked past day to day inhibitions. There are people in that phase right now. Every action they take has a weight, a value, a reason just like everyone. But that weight, value, and reason is determined by something other than themselves. If your actions don't help you achieve your goals, then your life is being dictated by something or someone that is holding you back. No one knows you better than you. It's the simple idea that you can create your own destiny. This is why Batman says, "It's what you do that defines you," and why Dumbledore says, "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." Don't let yourself stop yourself from doing anything. Don't let other people stop you from doing what you want. Obviously use some form of discretion, not everyone should do everything they want to do. That would be chaotic, no one grows up wanting to scrape poop off the side of a toilet. But if that person takes time to do things they want, they can be happy.

In 20 years I hope i'm not sitting in a bar just outside of Grand Rapids telling a 19 year old kid that I was going to write music but something came up and I didn't do it.

Twilight Film Reveiw

I've been really hard on humanity in my past few posts.

So I've decided to do something much more lighthearted. I'm going to tell you about the first Twilight movie! I've never seen any of the movies or read any of the books. Since I have no interest in watching the movie (nor the patience) I'm going to watch the trailer and give a synopsis based upon that.

So before going into it, here are some of the things I know about the movie because I live in America.

The main girl is human and her name escapes me but she is played by Kristen Stewart. She is in love with Edward who is a vampire. And some how there is a werewolf involved named Jacob and he takes he shirt off. That's about the extent of what I know from the books or movies. So I'm about to watch the trailer, here goes nothing...

How have I lived my life without seeing this movie?! Okay so, if you are interested the movie comes out on November 21st 2008, maybe i'm a little behind behind on this. But one things for certain and that is things will never be the same.

Here is what I saw in the trailer:

A pale white girl is going to her truck that is talked about in multiple country songs, I was surprised there wasn't a dog in the back. While she is doing this, Edward is creepily watching her, he is also pale. I can only assume that this is set in Seattle where the sun is a non-factor. There is a bigger brick building in the background which leads me to believe that they are in college. Suddenly a '94 Chevy Astro van comes flying inexplicably through the parking lot and loses control. If it were a brown Astro van it would be the one my parents used to own. From here I can only assume that this was no accident, this was an attempt on pale white girl's life. Luckily for her, Edward the vampire stops the van from crushing her against her truck. In this universe vampires have super strength I guess. He gazes longingly into her eyes and then runs away leaving her confused. So now the police and most likely the government have to be looking for him right? Because several people just witnessed him stop a runaway van with his arm and that's something scientists would probably want to study. Now it cuts to Kristen Stewart talking about his super powers, and she is unaware that he is a vampire. He climbs trees like a monkey and throws them like a Scottish man. Then he runs as fast as O.J. Simpson and jumps like someone famous for jumping. Okay, now I see them walking through a parking lot with other people who are in the age range of 20-25. I now take back what I said about them being in college, they must be in high school. If they were in college Hollywood would have cast people who were 25-30. They lay in the grass and stare at each other. He kicks an apple into his hands, which gets her incredibly aroused?

Now I think she has figured it out. From the voice over she says "Your skin is pale white and ice cold and you don't go out into the sunlight...Vampire." My issue with this is she just described herself and everyone else who I have seen in the trailer so far. Maybe she is a vampire and she doesn't know? Is everyone a vampire? Is it just that they are in Seattle? Next they are at the top of a very tall tree and they don't notice the helicopter that is circling them with a camera. Now the first of the passionate kissing, which I believe probably fills up the rest of the movie that isn't in this trailer.

A policeman tells the pale white girl that some one was eaten by an animal. Before he even stops talking she turns to walk away? That was rude, rewatch that part at 1:27 if you didn't catch it.

"I'm sorry, am I boring you?! A man was eaten alive by an animal!"

Edward tells her the pale white girl it was another vampire that ate somebody? It looks as though a gang war between Soc vampires and Greaser vampires is going to take place somewhere in the woods. Wait, are they wearing baseball jerseys? Was a game of vampire baseball just interrupted by a gang war? There is also some mention of a hunt, don't know what that's about. Why is everyone so good looking? I have never been to Seattle but I can't imagine this is what it's like. Then there is this:

"I would rather die, than stay away from you." -Pale White Girl   Sigh...

Okay, we continue. The dread lock vampire tells us that leader of the Soc's who looks like Chad Kroeger, is the best vampire there is. Okay, I'm getting lazy now because this is hard to watch. I'm just going to say the verbs of the things is see next. Running. Driving. Staring. Jumping. Choking. Throwing. Pushing. Rolling. Staring. Diving. Tackling. And we sum it up with Edward the vampire saying "You are my life now."

What do I think the movie is about?

Does it really matter? From watching the trailer, not a lot of the plot is left up to your imagination. But that's understandable, because I don't think they thought anybody who hadn't read the books was going to see this movie. Maybe that's why they didn't say a single characters name throughout the entire trailer! I still don't know what the main girl's name is! It would have helped me for Edward the vampire to say "Blank, you are my life now." And where was Jacob the werewolf? 1/3 of what I knew about this movie wasn't in the trailer!

But If I had to give a synopsis about the movie it would be like this. Edward, his younger brother, and his single mother move to Seattle. Edward's younger brother makes friends with two kids in a comic book store who claim to be vampire hunters. Edward finds himself enamored with a pale white girl and he joins a biker gang, who's leader is Chad Kroeger. They turn out to be vampires and they bite Edward to make him a vampire. Edward starts feeling bad about being a vampire and eventually turns against the vampire bike gang. He saves the pale white girl from the biker gang and kills the Chad Kroeger who also turned out to be dating his mom.

Was I close?

The Implication of Aliens

Have you ever seen an Unidentified Flying Object?

I don't think I have. I saw something weird in the sky the night the Pistons beat the Lakers for the NBA title in 2004. But that was probably just a collective physical manifestation of Lakers fan's disbelief floating away into the night sky. Lets get real, are there aliens or not? If you're an alien please let me know, but only if you're an E.T. alien and not an Alien alien.

That would make for an awesome movie though.

There have been so many sightings and reports of alien activity, but I haven't seen any concrete evidence, which leads me to believe there aren't any. But then I feel like anything is possible because of the size of our universe and everything we don't know. What would it mean to you personally if there were aliens? Whoever you are, whether you believe in a God, or if you are an atheist or an agnostic. It would really mean something for different for everyone. Would it be terrifying? Would it shake your faith? Would it dislodge everything you hold to be true? Would you be excited about it like the people on top of the skyscraper in Independence Day?

If we were to find some sentient life on other planets, or if they were to find us, I think it would shake my faith some.  As a believer of intelligent design I would want to know if they are privy to the same benefits I have found in my faith. Essentially did Jesus die on the cross for them too? I can't answer that question.

I don't think I could trust an alien either. That makes me speciesist I think. If a sentient life form came to earth I don't see why they would be friendly, they have come to harvest us or force us into slavery. . And you know what? They should. We would do it to them. Shoot, America was founded on kicking people out of their homes. Have you not seen Avatar? Also aliens probably don't have the same moral guidelines that are loosely enjoyed here on Earth. Who knows what they are like, we are limited to the framework of what we have experienced on Earth, so as humans we limit their capabilities. That's whats strange about aliens, they could already be living among us controlling our every move. You would never know.

If that's the case I know who to call.

Let me put a little science fiction twist on U.F.O sightings.

We are our own aliens. Perhaps in the future time travel is discovered by the American government and strictly regulated. The government comes up with this time travel law that says that you can use it for research, but you must not interfere with any culture or society that you encounter. So they have to stay in their time travel aircraft and do their research from the air. Obviously since they know the technology of the time they are going to they know how to stay off radar and how to stay undetected. But every now and then as they are flying over a rural highway in the middle of the night a redneck sees them. That would explain U.F.O sightings wouldn't it? Its just us, from the future. Just think if you were from 1955 and you saw a DeLorean flying above you? What would you think it was a U.F.O or a time machine?

The Utopian Future

Where does the news break the fastest?

Twitter. Facebook. When Seal Team 6 killed Bin Laden where did you read it? I read it in about 300 simultaneous status updates and tweets. We Americans want things as fast as they can possibly be given to us. But how fast is too fast?

Lets say that Facebook and Twitter existed in 1990, and from now i'm going to refer to them as Twitbook Plus to make it easier on me. Okay, so 1990, not everyone has a personal computer, the internet is in its early stages of being a thing, so Twitbook Plus doesn't get used much. Fast forward to 1998, you're on your way home from seeing Armageddon with your bros and you're Gettin' Jiggy wit it to your brand new Will Smith compact disc. When you get home you want to check your Twitbook Plus so you turn on your computer, 15 minutes later it is up and running. Then you click the internet explorer 4.0 icon on your desktop and 20 minutes after that you are on the World Wide Web. Just another 3 minute wait and you are on the Twitbook Plus home page rapidly digesting any news you can. Fast forward to 2007, the release of the iPhone! Now where ever you can make a baby cry you can get reception to the internet! Is that not how iPhones are fueled? I don't know I don't own one. Regardless of the science behind the iPhone, you now have a hand held device that you can take almost anywhere and be connected to Twitbook Plus. Twitbook Plus is being used by a very large amount of people and news spreads quickly.

Fueling the iPhone since 2007

Fast forward to 2012. 1 in 7 people on Earth are on Twibook Plus. The internet is faster than ever before and accessible virtually everywhere. Yet still nothing can deliver it to us faster than the device we have to hold in our hands, what an inconvenience! If only a large company could develop something to display our Twitbook Plus right in our vision, that's something I could really get behind.

So where do we go from Google Glass?

We become the Borg. Uh oh, I'm a nerd. In case you are unaware the Borg are a race of cybernetic organisms from the delta quadrant in the Star Trek universe. They communicate in collective thought and have a hive mind. In other words they learn and gain experience collectively. Its really what we do now with Twitbook Plus but at an instantaneous rate. Their goal as a race is to become the perfect life form, so they "assimilate" other species to gain their biological and technological distinctiveness. Essentially taking what is good from another species and applying it to what they already know and have. They are the greatest villain in Star Trek because ultimately they have the same goal as human beings without the moral restrictions.

Now that most people have stopped reading I will move on to my point. There are humans in the Star Trek universe. They live in a Utopian society and are a part of the United Federation of Planets. I really can't explain their society better than this:

Star Trek is set 300 years in the future. On Earth during that time there is no hunger, there is no money, there is no war. All of mankind's needs are met. Beauty pageant contestants having nothing to wish for anymore. The challenge of life is to simply better yourself. Is this not what we want today? Imagine if you woke up on Monday and you didn't have to go to work because you don't need money anymore. Anything you need is given to you. You would go to work only to further humanity. That is such a strange thought with today's mindset because not many people think that what they do is helping humanity in any way. Also, no one would go to work are you crazy! If you could do anything you want, would you do anything at all? If I didn't have to work and could do whatever I wanted, I would stay home with my wife. I would hang out with my friends. I would listen to music, play video games, complain about nothing in a blog. I sure wouldn't be curing diseases or helping humanity advance in any way. Very few would, or some would for a while, and then they would just begin to live their life vicariously through some one who is on Twitbook Plus. I would like to believe there is hope for us to turn this planet into a place of peace and abundance, but I can't help think that we are becoming more like the Borg than the United Federation of Planets. Of course with less assimilating and more fast food.

Let me leave you with this thought.

If you asked a 14 year old girl from Anywhere, U.S.A if she could have a chip put in her arm that would allow her to update her Facebook and text with her brain, do you think she would want one? It's one step away from Google Glass and one step closer to...

The Saddest Commercial on TV

There's a very sad commercial on TV right now.

I know what you are thinking, but Sarah Mclachlan surprisingly has nothing to do with it. I have included a link to it. Click the blue word. Red. See what I did there? Anyway, that commercial is really sad isn't it? I'm sure you're asking, "What's so sad about it Justin? That guy seems to have a very interesting life!" At first glance, I would say the same thing since he is at all those interesting places. But is he really experiencing anything? He seems to be pretty preoccupied with his phone. There he is at the bean in Chicago and then at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. And other places! (to be honest those were the only two I could really identify quickly) But the other places look fun and interesting too! He only looks up long enough from his phone to subliminally persuade you to buy something with his soul sucking eyes. What they didn't show you is him having to ask his friends to repeat what they said, him running into a glass door at the Apple store, or him getting hit by a car trying to cross the street.

OBEY.

So what the heck is wrong with us?

Why can't we sit in a room with other people without being connected to something or someone else outside of that room? Undivided attention is in short supply these days. It seems that we as a society have reached a point where if you aren't doing more than one thing at a time, you are wasting time. So instead of doing one thing really well, like having a conversation and listening intently to someone, we do a lot of crappy things, like have four conversations and getting in useless fights or wasting time with misinformation because something wasn't communicated correctly. In the end you are wasting time anyways.

I don't mean to be that guy who asks a "remember when things were different" question but...

Remember the days when the phone and internet were separate? Literally though, you had to get off the phone to use the internet. That actually forced you to do one thing at a time, in fact it forced your whole family to do one thing at a time, you know back when families did things together. Now the phone and the internet go hand and hand, but really who uses a phone to make phone calls anyways?  I will be the first to tell you, I love the internet. It's truly changed the way we do everything for better and for worse. But it really needs to be used as a tool for gathering information rather than a substitute for your brain. It is ultra convenient to have a smart phone, that way when ever you want to check how closely associated some one is with Kevin Bacon you can! But all the while some one might be trying to talk to you, or you might be on fire, how are you supposed to know? One strange thing about the internet that I will be referencing often is that as soon as I hit publish on this post, it's there on the internet to stay. Some one might be reading this in the year 2312. I really don't want to exclude those readers by using the words like "smart phone" or "Sarah Mclachlan" so I should explain some things. A smart phone, ironically enough, is something from our time that has made us dumber and more reliant on our technology. Which obviously you guys know leads to the Machine Uprising of 2257. Sarah Mclachlan is just someone who makes you feel bad about yourself, that's all.

"It could be worse, I could be the guy from the AT & T commercial"

I'm not against smart phones, the only reason I don't own one is because I can't afford it. I just don't think people are using them correctly. I think it's great if you skype with a loved one out of state; continue to do this as it is an obvious benefit of our technology. I also think there is a time to just sit and surf the the web on your smart phone. The secretary of state is a great example. I don't want to talk to you there because you are either sweaty or angry, so I don't mind if you unplug from society. But there are many more inappropriate ways to use your device.  I think it's wrong that you text your mom to bring you food from the next room. You should probably reevaluate your life.

There are obvious benefits and downfalls to our technology today, and just like anything else that is fun, do it in moderation. So while you are hanging out with your friends this week, put down your smart phone and... I don't know, what do you do without a smart phone?

8 Legged Symbols

I don't want to dream about spiders anymore.

They always show up to ruin things though, and I don't understand it. Spider's and I have a pact, if I see them I kill them. That may seem one sided to you, I think they've realized this and are trying to get to me via some sort of arachnid astral projection. Who do you turn to when you want exorcise spiders from your dreams? I thought I would go to the most credible source of information. That's right I went to Yahoo Answers. In possibly the most unlikely turn of events, I found the answer I think I was looking for. A witch doctor by the name of 1337 told someone else with the same problem that spiders in dreams meant, "A desire to be productive and creative". While I don't typically trust witch doctors on the internet, I found this particular information rather insightful.

"Sweet dreams!"

I have been stifling my creativity lately. Perhaps rightfully so, I have been pretty busy with married life, my full time job, and learning how to become an adult. Over the last few months, I've played the least amount of guitar since I picked up the darn thing 8 years ago. My reading and writing have taken a hit. Even my general scheming has come to an all time low. So what should I do?

Well I've decided to change.

I'm taking a step outside of my comfort zone, and I'm writing this blog. I have always had a problem with blogging. I think I find it some what pretentious because the language of blogs assumes there will be an audience.  But what the heck, people have told me I should do it before, and I think it will help stop those spiders.

I have topics for my next 5 posts, but i'm new at this so we can do it together. If you have any suggestions for a topic please let me know. Look how pretentious I am already!
